During hyperbaric oxygen therapy the patient is placed safely
and comfortably in a large chamber with 100% oxygen at pressure 1.5 to 3 times
that of normal atmospheric pressure. Most patients appear calm and relaxed
during hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
During this time, oxygen is absorbed by the blood plasma,
cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord, and in lymph and other body
fluids delivering more healing oxygen to tissues for cell repair and
metabolism.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
treatment has three phases:
Compression:
Once the patient is situated comfortably inside, the chamber
door is sealed and pressurization begins. At any time compression can be
slowed or stopped. Compression typically takes about 15 minutes, but can
be tailored to each individual patient.
Treatment:
Once at depth, the patient is put on pure oxygen. The
chamber will be continuously ventilated to ensure the climate in the chamber is
comfortable. Treatment typically takes 90 minutes, but may vary depending
on the prescription.
Decompression:
Once the time at the treatment depth is completed,
depressurization begins. Air / Oxygen is slowly exhausted out of the
chamber; decreasing the pressure and bringing the patient back to the
surface. Decompression typically takes 15 minutes.
The total treatment time lasts for about of 60 minutes and pressures desired by the physician depending on the clinical indication. Breathing 100% oxygen at 2ATA for 60 minutes is a remarkably safe regimen. Patients are not required to undergo any sedation and can remain calm and relaxed during treatment. When the treatment ends your pet can return immediately to normal activities.
How
veterinary VHBOT is administered for small animals:
1. Pet patients are placed
into a comfortable chamber specially designed for animal patients.
2. In the chamber, they
receive 100% oxygen that is inhaled safely and painlessly at a pressure that is
equivalent to twice the atmospheric pressure (2 ATA).
3. The healing oxygen is
dissolved in the pet’s blood plasma, cerebrospinal and lymph fluids, enabling
oxygen to reach damaged tissue three to four times farther than normally managed
through red blood cells.
4. Most patients are calm
and relaxed during treatment and do not require sedation.
5. The treatments lasts
about 60 minutes. The pressure is brought slowly to atmospheric pressure and
the chamber door is opened
6. Your pet is monitored
during treatments, through the view ports and a video camera.
7. Your pet can carry on
with normal activity immediately after the treatment.
Multiple veterinary patients may be treated at a time in small animal veterinary hyperbaric chambers. Breathing 100% oxygen at 2ATA for 60 minutes is a remarkably safe regimen. Patients are not required to undergo any sedation and can remain calm and relaxed during treatment.
